Why Your Talk
Isn't Working Yet

For business owners who want their talk to build trust, position them as the expert, and lead to real opportunities.

Most business owners are one or two changes away from a talk that actually works.

"If your talk isn't working yet, that is useful information — not bad news."

Many business owners are sitting on talks that are nearly there. They know their subject. They care deeply. They may even get warm feedback when they speak.

And yet — the talk isn't creating quite the level of trust, clarity, authority, or follow-up they hoped for. That's often very fixable. Score yourself across five areas below, then total your result to find your profile.

01 Authority
02 Clarity
03 Connection
04 Delivery
05 Action

The Underplayed Expert
Strengthen authority

You know your stuff. The problem is your talk isn't yet signalling authority clearly enough. You may be holding back, over-explaining, or softening your message. Your audience may like you — but they're not yet fully feeling your expertise.

  • Say what you really believe more clearly
  • Reduce unnecessary softening or over-explaining
  • Help the audience understand why your perspective matters

The issue is rarely lack of expertise — it's that the talk isn't yet carrying your expertise strongly enough.

The Overloaded Teacher
Improve clarity

You care deeply, know a lot, and want to be useful. But your talk is carrying too much information and not enough transformation. Your audience may think "she knows her stuff" — but still struggle to repeat your key point or act on it.

  • Choose one core message
  • Cut detail that is useful but not essential
  • Make it easier for the audience to follow and remember your point

A clearer talk is not a less valuable talk. Very often, it is the opposite.

The Engaging but Unconverted Speaker
Sharpen the action

You connect well. People enjoy hearing you speak. But the talk isn't yet converting attention into authority, demand, or action. You're warm and likeable — but slightly vague, and leaving people interested without knowing what to do next.

  • Be clearer about where the talk is leading
  • Make the next step more visible
  • Ensure the talk builds momentum rather than simply ending

Connection matters — but connection on its own is not always enough.

The Authority Speaker
Refine & elevate

Your talk is doing what a strong talk should do. It builds trust, positions you clearly, and creates momentum. You're clear on your message, grounded in your delivery, and intentional about where the talk is leading.

  • Tighten what already works
  • Make the talk even more commercially useful
  • Strengthen the opening, story flow, and close

At this stage, the work is often less about fixing and more about elevating.

A talk that works for your business does five things.

01
Builds Trust Quickly
People don't need to guess whether you know what you're talking about.
02
Makes Expertise Easy to Follow
A great talk is not a knowledge dump. It is a clear journey.
03
Helps the Audience Feel Seen
They recognise themselves in the problem, the stakes, or the possibility.
04
Sounds Like You Mean It
Your delivery shapes whether people believe you. Pace, pause, voice — all matter.
05
Creates Movement
A good talk changes something — shifts perception, deepens trust, or sparks the next conversation.
